The Old Town runs downhill in one spine and the closes drop off it like ribs. The bridges you cross are standing on rooms nobody has lived in for two hundred years. Three walks carry more of this city than everything else put together.
With the entry ticket, or without
The castle is the one paid entry nearly everybody makes here, and the guided versions bundle the ticket so you walk in with the group instead of standing on the esplanade. Without a guide the rock is still worth it, but the Great Hall makes far less sense.
The vaults below South Bridge
The bridge arches were sealed into storage rooms, then slums, then nothing at all. Groups go down in small numbers because the chambers are the size of a front room, which is also why the evening slots close first.
Kirkyards, closes and the Covenanters
Greyfriars is the one everybody asks for, and the guides who run it know the difference between a story and a jump scare. Take the later departure: the graveyard shuts and the group has it to itself.

A food walk is dinner with a guide and better directions.
Six or seven stops, a quarter you would never have found, and enough food that the restaurant afterwards gets cancelled. The strongest run of walks on the site, from Lisbon to Ho Chi Minh City.
Some old towns are one long walk with a coffee halfway.
Dubrovnik down the Stradun, Split through a Roman palace people still live in, Prague from the Powder Tower to the bridge. These are the centres where a guide costs less than the parking would and the whole thing is done before lunch.

In Italy the walk is usually cheaper than the ticket it includes.
Rome, Florence, Venice and Naples all run on timed entries, and the guided walks bundle them: the Doge’s Palace, the Last Supper, a Vatican room at opening. Elsewhere it is a food crawl through a market quarter and the guide settling an argument about pizza.

What a guided walk costs, and what “free” really means.
A free walking tour is not free. The guide works on tips, ten to fifteen dollars a head is the going rate, and the group can be forty people. A paid walk buys a smaller group, a held slot and, often, the entry ticket.
Old-town loops, ghost walks, and most food walks outside the expensive cities.
Long food crawls, walks with a castle or museum ticket bundled in, small-group specialists.
A private guide for the day, and the walks that finish at a table somebody cooked for.
Three places a walking guide can open that nothing else can.
A coach drives past these. A bike goes by too fast. All three are doors, staircases and courtyards you would walk straight past without somebody to unlock them.
The vaults under South Bridge
When South Bridge went up in the 1780s the arches beneath it were walled into storage rooms. The damp ruined the stock, the merchants left, and the poorest of the city moved in until the chambers were sealed and forgotten for a century and a half. They were reopened in the 1980s. Groups go down a few at a time because a vault is the size of a front room, and the guides talk quietly because there is nothing else down there to talk over.

Berlin’s hidden courtyards
The Mitte tenements were built one behind another, so a single street door can open onto four linked courtyards running back the depth of a block. Some are art-nouveau tiled, some are workshops, one hid a brush factory that kept Jewish workers off the transport lists. The French Quarter after ten
The Quarter empties of day-trippers around nine and the balconies go quiet. How far you walk, how long it takes, and where the guide will be standing.
Most walks run two to three hours and cover two to four kilometres at talking pace, with stops. Three things worth checking first: whether the group is twelve people or fifty, whether the route has stairs and cobbles you would rather avoid, and exactly where the meeting point is, because “outside the cathedral” has four doors.
